Intrinsic Red Blend is a unique wine made from grapes grown in the famed Columbia Valley of
Washington state. The region’s warm climate, folded mountains with south-facing slopes, and well-
draining soil create a viticulture area prized for producing quality grapes. Warm days and cool nights
work together to preserve the sugar level and acidity of the grapes, while a long growing season ensures
full ripening, allowing for balanced wines with pronounced flavors.

Part of what makes Intrinsic Red Bend special is the grapes used to create it: Cabernet Franc and
Malbec. Cabernet Franc is a centuries-old grape, one of the first varieties planted in the Loire Valley and
in Bordeaux, France. It enjoys a storied history as an integral part of world-famous Bordeaux blends, and
as the parent grape for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Carménère. Cabernet Franc is revered for
producing aromatic, full-bodied wines with high acidity, red fruit flavors, and distinct herbaceous notes
such as green pepper. Once mainly found in France, it is now planted in major wine-producing regions
worldwide, including the west coast of the United States.

Malbec also originated in France, and is one of six grapes that commonly make up Bordeaux wines.
Much of France’s Malbec was crippled by the phylloxera epidemic in the 19th century, and the harsh
frosts of 1956 nearly finished off all the vines. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic Ocean, Malbec flourished in
Argentina. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Malbec skyrocketed to fame as a wine valued for its deep
color, intense fruit flavors like plum and blueberry, and robust tannins. Malbec also found a home in
Australian and U.S. vineyards, particularly in California, Southern Oregon, and Washington.
The winemaking techniques used to create Intrinsic Red Blend add further uniqueness. During
fermentation, the skins and juices are swapped. The Cabernet Franc juice remains on the Malbec grape
skins, and the Malbec juice remains on the Cabernet Franc grape skins. The result: a complex wine with
harmoniously integrated flavors.
